Look beyond a gig app's gross payout

Travel and waiting time belong in the calculation.

Read the offer carefully

Review eligibility, background checks, payout timing and whether you are treated as a contractor or employee. Do not assume an app's quoted amount is take-home pay. Check official platform terms directly; bonus conditions and availability may change.

Account for the vehicle

If driving is involved, include fuel, maintenance, depreciation, parking and tolls. Ask your insurer whether the work is covered and when coverage applies. A personal auto policy may not cover every business use. Do not begin a delivery or passenger service until you understand the insurance position.

Track a complete work session

Record gross receipts, tips, expenses, distance and time from preparation through returning home. Separate waiting, repositioning and active task time. Compare repeat sessions rather than treating a strong isolated payout as normal. If you feel pressured to drive while tired or distracted, stop.

Set a stopping rule

Decide in advance how much money and time you can risk in a trial. Review net earnings before adding equipment or financing a vehicle. Check local permit and tax obligations. If work does not cover costs, a different service or an employee job may be a better fit.

Your working checklist

  • Read eligibility, payout and insurance terms for the exact work and location.
  • Track a full session, including preparation, waiting, return travel and costs.
  • Decide what result would make you stop the trial before spending more on equipment.

Can a bonus make an otherwise weak gig worthwhile?

Possibly for that specific session, but check every condition and the cost of completing it. Record the bonus separately so you can see the underlying work economics. Do not assume a temporary promotion will continue when comparing the activity with another income option.
