Side Income Starter · a practical fieldbook

Keep side-income records from the start

A separate record is more useful than a shoebox at filing time.

Record money consistently

Log income when received, expense dates, descriptions and receipts. Separate business and personal spending in your records. Keep copies of invoices, refunds and platform statements. A payout deposit may already have fees removed, so reconcile it with gross sales instead of counting the deposit as the whole story.

Understand the US distinction

Income tax and self-employment tax are different. The IRS self-employed tax center explains net profit, estimated payments and the relevant forms. A platform's decision to issue or not issue an information form does not determine all of your tax obligations. Rules depend on your facts and tax year.

Plan a reserve

Use a rate chosen with a tax professional or an official worksheet. The site tool simply multiplies positive profit by your chosen percentage; it does not calculate tax due, a safe harbor, deductions or eligibility for benefits. Keep any reserve available for taxes rather than treating it as spending money.

Review before deadlines

Consult the current IRS guidance and your state or local tax authority. Revisit estimates when income changes. Keep records securely and do not upload tax documents to an unknown service. If you are unsure about classification or deductions, get qualified advice before filing.

Your working checklist

  • Reconcile gross receipts, refunds, fees and deposits for the same period.
  • Store receipts and a description of the business purpose where you can retrieve them.
  • Review current IRS and local guidance before choosing a reserve rate or filing method.

Does the reserve calculator tell me what to pay the IRS?

No. It applies your selected percentage to positive entered profit. Actual obligations can depend on other income, deductions, credits, filing status and payment rules. Use an official worksheet or qualified tax advice to determine payments; keep the calculator output as a planning note only.
